Careers in Online Marketing
Since the start of the Great Recession, everybody in the world either has-or knows somebody-who has been laid off. Unfortunately, many of those jobs lost are never going to come back again. Therefore, there is a large number of people out there who is doing whatever they can to start a new career. This is further made more difficult due to large number of recent college grads that need to start their own careers. And, a great deal of people are looking to break into the fields of online marketing and social media. So, for those people, here’s some tips about web marketing jobs.
First off, keep in mind that your college major is not extremely important. While there are certain majors which seem particularly well-matched for a career in this field (such as Marketing, Advertising, or Communications), exactly what you went to school for does not have the same level of necessity that it does for other fields. I, for example, got my degree in English, and I have coworkers who majored in everything from History to Religion to Africana Studies. While there is a great number of people who DO have bachelors in Marketing, they’re not ubiquitous.
However, what is incredibly important is getting an internship; other than the founders, every employee I work with have started their careers as unpaid interns. You might scoff at the notion of working for free, but it really is a necessary evil. However, on the other hand, I was hired after only interning for about a month, so, you might not be working without getting paid for too long.
Of course, you’re going to have to have a great deal of knowledge about social media best practices to succeed. Check out to the popular blogs that write about social media, like Mashable, and learn what you can. There are also thousands of book on the subject you can get, but, in my opinion, you can probably learn everything you need to for free on the Internet.
Lastly, you should practice. I was able to receive my internship because I did social media management for a tiny charity, so they knew that I knew what I was talking about. Volunteering is always fantastic for your career and, unlike your internship, you can do it while doing something else, so that make things vastly easier.
