The now defunct XFL was practically doomed from the start. In competing against the NFL, Vince McMahon was taking on one of the most powerful forces in the country. The NFL is not just a sports league, it’s a powerful business entity as well. What the XFL didn’t have was a good social media agency or web marketing strategy. If they had access to such a thing, maybe they would still be around.
The XFL was built to be the extreme football league. They changed the regulations of regular football and had a million dollar championship payoff. The start of the XFL was marked by a incredible marketing tidal wave. It seemed like a promising start for the league brave enough to challenge the NFL’s monopoly on the sport.
One flaw with the XFL is that it tried something that other leagues have tried before. The NFL juggernaut was just too strong. If Facebook and Twitter had been around then, it’s possible that the playing field so to speak would have been dramatically different. The players and league could have taken the social media world by storm.
The players likely could have been Tweeting to their fans, during games, knowing the rules and regulations of the XFL, this likely would have been allowed. They likely would have been able to engage the fans in the new league, talking it up. They most likely could have run Facebook and Twitter accounts on behalf of the new teams and players, reaching out to millions of probable fans.
Perhaps the marketing force that is the NFL could have faced some real opposition if the XFL had had an online marketing firm, perhaps not. Trying to compete against such an established brand is difficult enough. Doing it against one of the biggest brands in the country has got to be impossible. Even with online marketing, the XFL may not have survived but maybe it likely could have leveled the field.
