Why Online Marketing is the Way to Go

You don’t have to be employed by from a social media agency to be thinking why your communication strategy needs to think about an online marketing component. Simply put, if you run a company and you’re NOT doing some form of social media marketing, you’re not doing all you can. Social media marketing is incredibly popular nowadays, but not everyone gets just what the best way to use it is. So, here is a list of how different companies have successfully utilized web marketing to nurture their online presence and increase sales.

First we have Blendtec which asked customers “will it blend?” in a collection of humorous clips on the popular video sharing site, YouTube. These videos showed a variety of expensive objects being thrown into blenders to try to see if they would end up either destroyed in a blender or safe. Everybody loves witnessing rampant destruction, so it’s pretty clear why these videos fast became viral. But, most critically, the viewers did not remain viewers, they actually went out and bought the blenders themselves.

You may not know much about Sun Microsystems, but really should see what they’re about. Sun Microsystems launched a very effective blog where they allowed both positive and negative comments to encourage an honest and open conversation. Unlike other corporations which frequently try to censor folk who dissent with what the brand had done or is doing, Sun Microsystems realized that honesty is the best policy. This vastly improved both customer satisfaction and sales.

Starbucks is huge so I think that you already understand everything that they are about. What you might not have heard, however, is that Starbucks actually made their own social media site that quickly became all the rage. They developed a webpage that let users give suggestions on how Starbucks could improve as well as letting other clients choose what ideas they most wanted to see come turn into practice. By doing this, Starbucks created a forum where their customers could have their voices be heard, showing and that even a big business like Starbucks cared enough by each individual customer to listen to what they had to say. Now, that’s great PR if I’ve ever heard it.

There are those who (erroneously, in my opinion) believe that social media has not yet come into its own as a marketing tool. These three businesses clearly prove that this is not the case. Companies are utilizing social media as part of their communications strategy, with amazing results. You simply cannot afford to allow this revolution to pass you by. That’s all I can say.
